Media Forum in Syria’s Qamishli addresses the printed media

Representatives of published newspapers and magazines in Autonomous Administration territories of north and east Syria, discussed yesterday the reality of the Kurdish written media in Kurdish and Arabic languages, at a forum about written and printed media, hosted by the city of Qamishli, northeast Syria.

The forum organized by the Free Media Union was entitled “Towards the Development of Written Media”, and discussed two themes with six lectures.

The lectures discussed the history of the written Journalism in Kurdish and Arabic through a historical narrative, in addition to the difficulties and obstacles facing the written and printed media, and means of solving them.

The lectures were addressed by an elite group of journalists and writers, including writer and researcher Fares Othman and the co-chair of the Free Media Union, Avin Yousef.

In addition to the topics addressed in the lectures, discussions were opened with participants as the forum lasted for eight hours.

According to journalist Avin Yousef, the idea of the forum came out as part of several meetings would be organized by the Union later, as she told North-Press: “We have been preparing for the forum for two months, and our main goal is to develop the written media, especially magazines and newspapers.”

As for invitation mechanism, Yousef said that they met with representatives of newspapers and magazines and invited them after discussions about difficulties and challenges, which were the focal points of meetings and lectures in the forum.

Khoshman Qado, a writer and representative of the cultural magazine “RÊ” told North-Press: “The forum made suggestions that would develop the written media, which is the top benefit from the forum.”

At the end of the forum, the final statement, recommendations, and suggestions were issued in several items, as the results of the discussions and lectures included in the forum, of which the call to open an information faculty in the University Rojava under the supervision of academics, specialists and experts in media work, supporting written media institutions and providing them with professional cadres’ staff and editors in Arabic.

The recommendations also addressed a proposal to amend the public information law in line with the reality in the Autonomous Administration areas, in accordance with the conditions and standards of the international laws, to allocate specialized legislation and laws, and to develop a dictionary of media terminologies through language and media experts, to be a reference to all media outlets.

Avin Yousef stated that they would convey these suggestions and recommendations to the authorities concerned with media in the Autonomous Administration region, and to disseminate them through their media platforms for public opinion and media.

The Free Media Union is a semi-independent press union, which has worked on granting licenses and press functions, prior to organizing the work of the media in the Autonomous Administration areas, the Union includes more than 200 journalists and media workers.
