Lebanese Authorities Send 621 Refugees Back To Syria

More than 170,000 Syrian refugees have been back to their country from Lebanon from December 2018 and March 2019, according to the Lebanese Public Security estimations.

A campaign called ” The Voluntary Return” launched by the Lebanese Public Security with the Syrian government, the Lebanese government announced on Saturday that hundreds of Syrians have already moved back from Lebanon to their country.

In a statement published on Saturday, The Lebanese Public Security Service said that its members had secured “The Voluntary Return” for 621 Syrian refugees into Al-Masn’a, Al-Qa’ and Al-Abboudiya border crossings.

Lebanon had nearly hosted more than a million and half a million Syrian refugees since 2011 according to UNHCR.

Human Rights Watch has repeatedly called on other countries to increase their support for Lebanon and to resettle larger numbers of Syrian refugees living in Lebanon.

Prominent Lebanese politicians have repeatedly called on refugees to return to Syria since 2017, the Lebanese authorities pressed on the UNHCR to organize the return process despite the continued conflict in Syria.

UNHCR said that it cannot encourage or facilitate the return of the refugees before it makes sure that the situation in Syria is completely safe.
The Lebanese Public Security stated last March that since May 2018  172,046 Syrian refugees went back to their country.

The Lebanese Public security Service has been facilitating the return of the refugees since May 2018, where more than 170,000 Syrian refugees have been back to their country from Lebanon between December 2018 and March 2019.

Some Syrian refugees have said that they are going back to Syria because of the harsh policies and the deteriorated conditions in Lebanon, not for the reason that Syria has become a safe place, according to HRW.
