Dismissal of Teachers of Suran-Ezzaz Spark Resentment and Protest against the Town Authorities
For months, continuous protests against decisions issued by the local town council, with demands of reform and change inside the council in Suran, a town of Ezaz in the northern countryside of Aleppo.
A correspondent of “North Press” reported a growing resentment by the teachers of the town after the council’s recent issued decisions, which included “suspension of the work for two teachers,” namely Bassam Hamsho and Muhamad Fatih Juma’a.
Bassam Hamsho, a mathematics teacher and Bachelor of Geology in Geological engineering, told North Press the demands of the protesters’ and the reason why he was dismissed by the local council in Suran.
“The local council was formed by people who imposed themselves without elections.
When the town was liberated from ISIS, Turkish troops entered the area and kept the local council.”
Hamsho added, “After days and months, this council offered nothing but control over the town and spread nepotism; as if they are still under the control of the Syrian regime institutions,” he continued saying that the elders of the town made several visits to the council to reach an understanding point with council’s members and work on some changes “but in vain.”
In addition, peaceful protests stemmed from the failure of response by the council, where their number reached thousands of people. Also civilians from Suran-Ezzaz and neighboring villages participated, according to Hamsho. He pointed that they “demanded the reform of the council or the removal of it.”
Complaints were sent to the concerned authorities with the internal affairs of Syria within the Turkish authorities, but all those attempts have failed. “
Stop demonstrations or suspension from work.
Hamsho added to North Press that he was informed by the Education Directorate to stop the demonstrations and the incitement against the council, claiming that they violated the laws of the directorate, and asking him to sign a pledge of not to demonstrate. However, he refused and returned to demonstrate again against the council.

Hamsho was surprised latter with the decision of suspending his work, which he considered an “arbitrary decision,” that the President of the Council, the Director of Education, and the Director of Security are responsible for that.

Furthermore, some citizens from Suran-Ezzaz told North Press about the Law Enforcement forces and heavily armored elements for “Intimidating and terrorizing the protesters”, while teachers in Suran and Kafra issued statements of solidarity with the dismissed teachers and described the issued decision as a “Tyrannical Decision,” defending their right to demonstrate.
Moreover, another demonstration of high schools in Suran was suppressed and prevented by the local council in the town.
“The demonstrations will continue until all the demands are met, and all the corrupted figures of the Syrian revolution are eliminated,” said the teacher Bassam Hamsho accusing them of “Doing acts of tyranny and dictatorship.”
