Active movement in Raqqa markets witness with the start of Ramadan

The licorice seller invites people to buy this drink,  as some other sellers do, in the markets of Raqqa city to celebrate the start of Ramadan’s holy month, that has its special ritual and mode.

After more than four years of war and fighting during the Islamic State’s control of Raqqa city, the residents receive the first day of Ramadan in its special moments, where markets and shops witness active movement more than the previous years.

Ramadan has its special drinks and food, as dates are considered to be food, that people, in most Muslim countries, keen on having it, and it is abundant in the markets of Raqqa.

” Ramadan this year is better than the ones before because the people of the city were in the camps, where the Islamic State was in control of Raqqa, the city that was heavily destructed.” Ahmed Ibrahim al-Sabah, a citizen of Raqqa city and an owner of a grocery store, told the North Press, adding that they would take the people’s situation into consideration, regarding the prices.

“Ramadan this year is better than the previous years and there is a demand for buying and selling,” said Ali al-Shaib, a resident of Raqqa.

Furthermore, materials are available in the market this year, wherein the previous years, there was material blockade and rigidity because of war.

For his part, Hisham Ahmed Wahid, a resident of Raqqa, pointed out that in the past years they were breaking fasting while the shelling was continued and shrapnel were flying over their heads.

Abu Abdo the (tamarind) seller, wishes a good Ramadan this year, with health and wellbeing for all.

They will provide all kinds of drinks for Ramadan such as licorice and tamarind (special Ramadan drinks).

It is noteworthy that during the control of the Islamic State organization over Raqqa, many of Ramadan rituals disappeared and lost its heritage and historical character, including the sound of the breakfast cannon, which the organization considered ” a heresy.”
