On Sunday, Russian ambassador to Tehran Levan Jagarian denied reports that the media had circulated about Russia, Iran, and Turkey reaching an agreement regarding the resignation of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
In an interview with the Iranian "Mehr" agency, the Russian ambassador said, "As you know there are some unfounded rumors saying that Russia is not satisfied with Syrian president Bashar al-Assad. These rumors do not reflect the official attitude of the Russian government. Russia will continue to support the Syrian government, and the future of this country is in the hands of the Syrian people, and it is they who decide their affairs."
"Perhaps these rumors were spread by some people who do not have a political position…only the official representatives of Russia, the government, and the Russian foreign minister can express the official political stance," Jagarian added.
Jagarian pointed out that military operations in Syria have stopped and the way has been paved for the start of negotiations thanks to the efforts of the parties involved in the Astana agreement, and expressed his hope that the political process in Syria will continue after the end of the coronavirus pandemic.
Various media outlets had reported on.an agreement between Russia, Iran, and Turkey that aimed to push the Syrian president to resign, and to carry out a political settlement of the war in Syria.
