Damascus is taking into consideration the possibility of filing an international suit against the United States over the Syrian oil. As Buthaina Shaaban, the political and media advisor in the Syrian Presidency, said that Syria is studying the possibility of filing an international suit against the United States of America because it is "plundering” the Syrian oil, according to her.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had confirmed in November that his country would file a complaint to the United Nations on the issue of "theft" of the Syrian oil by the United States.

Whereas, the U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that the American forces had secured the oil and gas fields in northeastern Syria, proposing at that time that Exxon Mobil, or another U.S. oil company, would manage the Syrian oil fields, the matter that sparked widespread reaction and criticism.

On the 3rd of December, 2019, the U.S. President said after a meeting with the NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in London: "ISIS has tried to maintain its control over the oil, but now we are the ones who control it completely. I say frankly, we have support of a large number of different people in this matter, and in fact, there are only those who protect the oil in the (Syrian) territories. Our oil is in our hands and we can do whatever we want.”
