The Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu met with the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York City and discussed several issues on the Syrian situation, the most important of which is the drafting committee of the Syrian constitution.
The closed-door meeting, which came before the 74th session of the UN General Assembly in New York City, was useful and discussed important issues, the Turkish minister said.
After the meeting, Cavusoglu answered reporters’ questions about the date of disclosing the names of the constitution drafting committee: “The UN special envoy to Syria Geir Pedersen will go to Syria on Monday and meet with the regime, and then we can talk about that.”
UN Security Council Resolution No. 2254 of 2015 provides for the redrafting of the Syrian constitution, within the framework of a political transition process.
Turkey, Russia and Iran have agreed during the tripartite summit held in Ankara on Monday that the drafting committee of the Syrian constitution will start its work as soon as possible.
The constitutional committee consists of 150 people, the Syrian government appoints 50 people and the Syrian opposition appoints 50 people, while the last third is chosen by the UN envoy to Syria from Syrian figures, intellectuals, jurists and representatives of the Syrian civil society.
