Former Russian diplomat Vyacheslav Matuzov denied Moscow’s intervention in the recent security changes, which affected some senior security leaderships in Syria.
“Moscow does not dictate Damascus what to do or not to do, because its policy is not to interfere in the internal affairs of other countries, Syria is an ally country, and Russia is concerned with Syria’s sovereignty and its territorial integrity,” Matuzov said in an exclusive interview with North-Press.
He added that Russia had only intervened to help Syria in its war against terrorism and that it “doesn’t deal with the policy of dictation with its allies”.
The former Russian diplomat considered the promoting of false news about “the presence of a Russian impact on the decision of changes in the senior security leadership in Syria comes in the context of attempts to weaken the morale of the Syrians, affect the internal front, and expand the circle of allegations about discrepancies between Moscow, Damascus and Tehran, in approaching the recent military developments, particularly in northern Syria”.
Matuzov noted that Moscow recognizes the complexities of the situation in Idlib and East of Euphrates and Rukban area camp, and it’s in coordination at the highest levels with the Syrian leadership, moment by another, to encounter the situation developments in those areas.
Moscow, Tehran and the Syrian file
As for media reports regarding the existence of deep conflicts between Moscow and Tehran concerning the Syrian file, Matuzov said that “Slight disagreements, if they exist, is a natural thing that may happen due to the detailed circumstances of the Syrian crisis, but the basis remains that Iran Is the most prominent ally in the war against terrorism in Syria”.
Matuzov ridiculed the allegations, which he described as “false” regarding clashes between members of the Russian forces on one hand, and Iranian forces on the other, as well as Russian attempts to weaken the Iranian presence in Syria, wondering ” Those who promote these lies, why don’t they provide what they say with one evidence?”
In response, Matuzov pointed to the statements of President Vladimir Putin’s special envoy to Syria, Alexander Lavrentiev, in which he stressed that the Russian leadership has clearly informed Washington and Tel Aviv about its stance regarding the Iranian presence in Syria, which he considers as legitimate, as well as its refusal to exert any pressure on the Islamic Republic of Iran In this context, describing it as useless.
