Mutlu Civiroglu, a journalist and Kurdish affairs analyst focusing on Syria and Turkey said that it’s difficult for the security summits launched by Washington for Syria to solve the complex Syrian scene, especially the dream of a political transition, where it seems immature, as Washington focuses on working on some of its priorities, such as the Israeli concern about Iranian influence in Syria, especially as it approaches the borders, and securing post-ISIS territories where the Global coalition fought against the terrorist group.
“We’ve heard Pompeo, long ago, talking about the need for a political transition in Syria, which is non-urgent objective to Washington or even consider it as its duty, where it does not have adequate control to achieve it,” Civiroglu said, “Washington is showing close attention and monitoring to the situation in the liberated areas from the Islamic State, since it’s a goal linked to the interests of the US national security and a US-led successful campaign, that it doesn’t want it to fail after spending efforts, money and time for years”.
As for the safe zones, the Washington-based journalist says that President Trump and his administration are taking into consideration other accounts, such as Trump’s pledge to “Protect the Christians of Syria, where he confirmed this pledge after defeating ISIS, which means that he realizes the threat to Christians”.
“It’s easy to understand the concerns of Christians (Armenian and Syriacs) in northern Syria of the Turkish influence, therefore, the Administration does not find it reasonable to accept the establishment of a safe zone to be run by Turkey, where there’s already demands by the residents of the northern Syria region to protect them, especially after the Turkish military campaign on the Kurdish region of Afrin”, he added.
While the public appearance of Saudi Arabia Minister and the US foreign officials in northern Syria to the press “Indicates to a new phase for the region, where Washington breaks the regional and international barrier that dreaded Turkey”.
“We see a new phase of public support for Autonomous Administration territories marked by the entry of influence of a Muslim Arab country like Saudi Arabia that reveals the seriousness of establishing sustainable solutions and guarantees to keep the region safe in a formula satisfies all components, as well as achieving the US and regional goals by ensuring the non-return of ISIS, and preventing the region from turning to an environment conducive to the Iranian influence,” he said.
