Washington warns Damascus of chemical use “We will respond quickly and appropriately”.
The U.S. Department of State announced on Tuesday that there are “signs” that the government of Bashar al-Assad in Syria launched a chemical attack on Saturday in northwest Syria.
Washington threatened the Syrian government to “respond quickly and appropriately” if the attack is confirmed.
The Department of State issued a statement on Tuesday in which there were “indications” of the Syrian Government’s chemical attack on Sunday morning in the northwest of the country.
“An alleged chlorine attack was launched in northwest Syria on the morning of May 19,” the Department of State spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said in a statement.
“We repeat our warning that if the Assad regime uses chemical weapons, the United States and our allies will respond quickly and appropriately”.
US President Donald Trump said that the use of chemical weapons is a red line, and so far, he has ordered twice to strike at Syrian military targets.
Ortagus said the alleged attack was “part of a violent campaign” by the President Bashar al-Assad’s forces violating a ceasefire that has protected million civilians in Idlib governorate.
“The regime’s attacks against the communities of northwest Syria must end,” the statement said.
The Department of State to Damascus, “The United States reiterates its warning first issued by President Trump in September 2018: any attack against the Idlib de-escalation zone would be a reckless escalation that threatens to destabilize the region,” Ms. Ortagus said. The United State threaten the Syrian regime with a quick and proper response.
