Lebanese court charges former Assad regime general with torture, killing
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Lebanese authorities on Friday announced that charges of torture and killing had been brought against former Syrian Army Major General Adel Issa, who was detained in Lebanon.
The case against Issa entered a sensitive stage after Lebanon’s Public Prosecutor at the Court of Cassation issued an arrest warrant against him over allegations of killing, torture and inciting sectarian strife in Syria.
The former Syrian general was questioned based on an extradition request submitted by the Syrian transitional government.
Lebanese authorities are considering whether to extradite Issa to the Syrian authorities or keep him subject to prosecution in Lebanon.
Last week, Lebanese authorities detained Issa, the former commander of the Syrian Army’s Division 17 under the al-Assad regime, after he entered the Syrian Embassy to complete a legal transaction. His detention followed Syrian arrest warrants and allegations related to killing, torture and crimes against humanity during the years of the war.
At the time, a judicial source told Sky News Arabia that the case would be referred to the Lebanese judiciary through diplomatic channels and the Syrian Embassy in Beirut, explaining that Issa was wanted under arrest warrants issued in Syria.
