Syria forces say 2 ISIS militants killed in Damascus countryside
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Syria’s Internal Security Forces said on Friday that they killed two ISIS militants while they were planting an improvised explosive device (IED) near Sayyida Zainab in the Damascus countryside.
The forces said in a statement that a patrol spotted two masked individuals acting suspiciously along roads leading to military barracks and government facilities during a nighttime operation.
When officers attempted to stop the suspects and verify their identities, the two opened fire, prompting an armed clash that ended with both militants killed, according to the statement and reported by the state-run SANA news agency.
The forces added that they later determined that the two men had been planting an IED as part of preparations for an attack targeting a government facility.
Additional explosive devices and weapons were recovered from the suspects, while investigations identified them as members of the Islamic State (ISIS), the statement added.
Syria’s Ministry of Interior said that security operations against ISIS are continuing to protect civilians and strengthen security and stability.
The ministry said the Internal Security Forces, in coordination with the General Intelligence Service, have foiled several ISIS-planned attacks in recent months.
The statement did not provide further details on the identities of the two militants or the targeted facility.
