Syria says wheat harvest tops annual demand
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Syria has received 2.7 million metric tons of wheat during the current harvest season, exceeding the country’s annual demand and achieving self-sufficiency in the staple crop, a senior official at the Syrian Grain Establishment said on Wednesday.
Ahmed Qaddoun, Deputy Director-General of the Syrian Grain Establishment, said wheat procurement from farmers remains ongoing as long as economically viable quantities continue to be delivered to collection centers, according to the state-run SANA news agency.
Qaddoun said the establishment has adopted a multi-level storage strategy to handle the large volumes and preserve grain quality. The plan includes directing wheat to silos and smaller storage facilities for preservation and regular fumigation, while surplus quantities are being stored in prepared, disinfected, and enclosed warehouses.
He added that the establishment is continuing wheat procurement and milling operations while simultaneously rehabilitating and expanding silos and storage facilities across Syria to increase storage capacity and accommodate larger harvests in the coming years.
