Iraqi commander says Syrian troop movements coordinated with Baghdad
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Iraq’s Border Forces commander, Lieutenant General Mohammed Abdulwahab Sakar al-Saeedi, said on Tuesday that the security situation along the Iraqi-Syrian border remains stable and that recent Syrian military movements are being carried out with Baghdad’s knowledge and coordination.
His remarks came after the Syrian Ministry of Defense instructed its forces to enter “Alert Level C” and deployed military units along the Syrian-Iraqi border earlier on Tuesday.
Al-Saeedi said there is currently no threat along the shared border, adding that coordination and intelligence-sharing with the Syrian side remain ongoing.
“Our forces maintain a strong presence along the border, and the Syrian side has not yet activated the border outposts,” he said.
The Syrian government has not issued any official explanation for the heightened state of alert or the reasons behind the military deployments.
The Syrian-Iraqi border has witnessed periodic security coordination in recent years as both countries seek to strengthen border security and prevent cross-border threats.
