Syria’s central bank sets July 30 deadline for old banknote circulation

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The Central Bank of Syria announced on Sunday that the deadline for circulating old banknotes will expire on July 30, following significant progress in the currency replacement process.

The bank’s media office said in a post on Facebook that, starting July 31, 2026, old banknotes will lose their legal tender status and will no longer be legally valid for circulation or financial transactions.

The central bank said the withdrawal of old banknotes will begin on July 31 and remain open for five years, with withdrawals to be conducted exclusively through the Central Bank of Syria in Damascus.

It added that applications to withdraw old banknotes must include at least 100 notes of any denomination, while requests involving fewer than 100 notes will not be accepted.

On May 30, the Central Bank of Syria announced a 30-day extension to the currency replacement period, effective July 1.

In late December, former Central Bank of Syria Governor Abdul Qader Hasriyeh announced the launch of a new Syrian currency.
