Drone intercepted near US Consulate in Erbil

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Iraqi air defenses intercepted on Saturday a drone near the US Consulate in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, according to Iraqi security sources.

The incident came a day after media reports said explosions and fires erupted near a military base hosting US forces in Erbil.

Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported that its correspondent heard several explosions near Erbil International Airport, where forces of the US-led international coalition are stationed.

An AFP correspondent also reported seeing smoke rising near the airport following the blasts.

Separately, an Associated Press journalist said at least seven explosions were heard and observed fires near the military base hosting US forces in Erbil.

No official statement has been issued regarding the cause of the explosions or whether the reported incidents resulted in casualties or damage.
