UN chief Guterres to visit Syria, meet al-Sharaa
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres will visit Syria later this week for the first time since assuming office, the United Nations announced on Friday.
During his visit to Damascus, Guterres is scheduled to meet Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, along with several senior government officials, including Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, to discuss a range of issues of mutual interest.
The visit comes as relations between Syria and the United Nations continue to develop following a series of meetings and exchanges focused on political transition, economic recovery, transitional justice, and the return of refugees after the political changes that began on Dec. 8, 2024.
The visit marks a significant step in ongoing engagement between Damascus and the United Nations, with discussions expected to focus on supporting Syria’s transitional process and addressing the country’s humanitarian and economic challenges.
