Israeli fire and shelling target areas in Daraa and Quneitra
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Israeli forces stationed at al-Jazeera military barracks opened fire on Thursday evening toward the outskirts of the town of Maariya in the western countryside of Daraa governorate, with no casualties reported, according to preliminary information cited by Syria’s state news agency (SANA).
Earlier the same day, mortar shells struck agricultural land between the villages of Maariya and Abidin in the Yarmouk Basin, following artillery shelling that targeted the outskirts of the villages of Abidin and Jamla, as well as farmland between the towns of Bariqa and Kodna in the western Daraa and southern Quneitra countryside.
The incident followed a similar event on Monday, when Israeli forces opened fire toward a group of young men riding motorcycles while taking part in a protest near al-Jazeera military barracks against the Israeli presence in the area.
Villages located near the 1974 disengagement line in the Daraa and Quneitra countryside have witnessed repeated incidents of gunfire and shelling in recent months.
The Syrian government has said such actions constitute a violation of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement and international law, calling on the international community to take action to halt them.
