Latakia port handles over 2 million tons of cargo in five months
LATAKIA, Syria (North Press) – Syria’s Land and Sea Ports General Authority on Friday announced that the Port of Latakia recorded significant growth in operational activity during the first five months of the year, with cargo volumes exceeding two million tons.
In a statement, the Authority said that more than two million tons of cargo and containerized goods were loaded and unloaded through the port aboard 273 vessels. The port also handled approximately 120,000 containers during the period.
According to the Authority, the figures reflect a steady improvement in performance and the impact of modernization measures aimed at simplifying customs procedures, facilitating import and export operations, and boosting transit trade.
The Authority added that operational growth was also supported by the introduction of modern equipment and machinery, which helped accelerate cargo handling and unloading operations while reducing vessel turnaround times at port berths.
Officials said the improvements have enhanced the port’s operational efficiency and handling capacity, strengthening its position as a key logistics hub on Syria’s Mediterranean coast and increasing its attractiveness to international shipping lines and maritime transport companies.
