QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian Ministry of Interior announced on Thursday the arrest of a cell affiliated with the Islamic State (ISIS) during a joint security operation in the eastern countryside of Aleppo, northern Syria.
The state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) quoted a source within the Ministry of Interior as saying that the operation was carried out in coordination with the General Intelligence Service, targeting suspected ISIS members in the area.
According to the source, security forces detained members of the cell and confiscated weapons, ammunition, and military equipment that were allegedly intended for use in carrying out attacks.
The source added that the cell was involved in multiple attacks, including assassination operations and direct targeting of security and military personnel.
ISIS, which once controlled vast areas of Syria and Iraq, continues to operate through sleeper cells, particularly in remote and contested regions. Security forces across different parts of Syria have intensified operations in recent years to track down and dismantle such networks.
The announcement comes amid ongoing security efforts by various authorities across Syria to curb the group’s activities and prevent further attacks.
