National Guard members killed in clashes with security forces in Suwayda
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Several members of the National Guard – a local armed group – were killed on Sunday during clashes with government-affiliated security forces in Suwayda Governorate, southern Syria.
Security sources told North Press that the casualties occurred after National Guard members attempted to advance on positions held by the Internal Security Forces along one of the frontlines in the governorate.
Meanwhile, local sources cited by Suwayda 24 reported that National Guard fighters fired several mortar shells toward areas under the control of Internal Security Forces in the western countryside of the governorate.
According to the same sources, the National Guard claimed that the shelling came in response to an alleged infiltration attempt by a group affiliated with the Internal Security Forces along the western axis of the city and its surroundings.
The developments highlight ongoing tensions and intermittent clashes between armed groups and security forces in Suwayda, amid a fragile security situation in the governorate.
