Switzerland contributes €200,000 to OPCW Syria Trust Fund
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Swiss government has made a voluntary contribution of €200,000 to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Trust Fund for Syria Missions, the OPCW announced on Wednesday.
The contribution will support Syria-related missions and activities carried out by the OPCW Technical Secretariat, including efforts to establish the full scope of Syria’s chemical weapons program, verify all declarable elements, and support the development and implementation of a destruction plan.
It will also fund investigations into allegations of chemical weapons use, including the identification of those responsible, as part of broader efforts to ensure compliance with the Chemical Weapons Convention.
The contribution was formalized on Jan. 29, 2026, during a signing ceremony at the OPCW headquarters in The Hague, attended by Switzerland’s Permanent Representative to the OPCW, Ambassador Corinne Cicéron Bühler, and OPCW Director-General Fernando Arias.
“The OPCW now has a historic opportunity to resolve all outstanding issues surrounding the use of chemical weapons in Syria,” Cicéron Bühler said, stressing that the organization’s work extends beyond destruction to include investigation and accountability.
She noted that the new contribution adds to nearly €2 million Switzerland has provided in recent years, underscoring its commitment to accountability and a world free of chemical weapons.
For his part, Arias thanked Switzerland for the contribution, saying continued international support is essential to closing the Syrian chemical weapons dossier, which he described as vital to international peace and security.
