Asayish repel government attack, destroy tank in Aleppo
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Internal Security Forces (Asayish) in Aleppo’s Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyeh neighborhoods announced on Thursday that they repelled a large-scale attack by Syrian government forces, destroying a tank in the process.
Since Tuesday, Aleppo has witnessed heavy clashes between government troops and the Asayish, leaving more than 100 people dead or injured, most of them civilians.
In a statement, the Asayish said, “Our forces managed to repel a wide-scale attack launched by Damascus-backed factions and armed groups on Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyeh, inflicting heavy losses and thwarting a military plan aimed at storming residential areas by force.”
The statement added that government forces attempted to advance with more than sixty tanks and armored vehicles, dozens of military trucks, and thousands of fighters, supported by drones and heavy fire cover. “The attack was foiled,” the Asayish confirmed.
Meanwhile, a Syrian military source told North Press that government forces repelled an attempted advance by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the al-Jalaa neighborhood. The source added that the army launched concentrated shelling against what it described as SDF positions inside Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyeh.
