Prominent American islamist journalist arrested in Syria
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Syrian security forces have arrested prominent US Islamist journalist Bilal Abdulkarim in the city of al-Bab, in northern Aleppo governorate, according to a report published Tuesday by Reuters.
Reuters cited two informed sources as saying that “Syrian security forces arrested a prominent American Islamist journalist who had been criticizing the new Syrian government and its emerging partnership with the United States.” The sources did not provide further details regarding the circumstances of the arrest or the charges brought against him.
Abdulkarim, an American citizen who has been living in Syria since 2012, is known for his coverage of the Syrian conflict and for engaging with Islamist circles throughout the war. Prior to relocating to Syria, he worked as a comedian in the United States before shifting to journalism focused on the conflict.
Over the past decade, Abdulkarim has worked with several foreign media outlets and has maintained a strong presence among foreign Islamist audiences. According to Reuters, he became a notable voice by providing a platform for hardline views, including criticism from Islamist figures who argue that President Ahmad al-Sharaa has compromised Islamic principles since assuming office.
Reuters said that neither Syria’s Ministry of Information nor a spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior responded to requests for comment on the arrest. A spokesperson for the US special envoy to Syria also did not immediately respond, according to the agency.
