Syria’s coalition membership marks defining moment, says U.S

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Diplomats from the U.S. Embassy in Syria said Tuesday that Syria’s accession to the Global Coalition to Defeat the Islamic State (ISIS) marks “a defining moment in its history and in the global war against terrorism.”

In a recorded statement published on the embassy’s official Facebook page, the diplomats announced that Syria has officially become the 90th member of the international coalition. The move comes amid renewed international focus on counterterrorism coordination and stabilization efforts across the region.

The embassy’s representatives stressed that ISIS “continues to kill Syrians, threaten innocent civilians, and endanger the country’s recovery process,” underscoring the persistent threat the group poses despite territorial losses.

They added that Syria’s accession to the Global Coalition will open the door for new opportunities in training and security cooperation, ultimately aimed at protecting all Syrians from terrorism.

The diplomats highlighted that this step represents a broader effort by Syria to engage with international partners, including the United States and other coalition members, in the fight against terrorism. “Working together with the United States and partner nations is part of the path toward building a safer and more stable Syria,” they said.

According to the statement, the embassy viewed Syria’s inclusion in the coalition as not only a military achievement but also a moral victory for humanity, reaffirming shared global responsibility in eliminating extremist threats.

The embassy officials emphasized that the next step toward a more prosperous Syria should be for the U.S. Congress to lift the Caesar sanctions, which have imposed significant restrictions on the Syrian economy in recent years.

The Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, established in 2014, includes dozens of countries and organizations that coordinate efforts to combat the extremist group. The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), supported by the coalition, have played a decisive role in defeating ISIS in northeastern Syria and continue to lead counterterrorism operations to prevent its resurgence.
