Syria’s envoy to UN highlights Syria-U.S. talks on agreement with SDF
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Syria’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Ibrahim Olabi, announced on Tuesday that the bilateral meeting between Syrian Transitional President Ahmad al-Sharaa and U.S. President Donald Trump addressed several key issues, including the March 10 agreement signed with General Mazloum Abdi, Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
Speaking on Syrian state channel Al-Ikhbariya, Olabi described the meeting as “historic for many reasons,” noting that the discussions covered a wide range of topics.
These included economic issues, the role of the United States through direct investments, and the lifting of remaining U.S. sanctions by Congress.
Olabi added that Trump personally lifted all sanctions within his authority and promised to follow up with Congress on additional measures.
The discussions also touched on the security agreement with Israel, with Trump emphasizing U.S. support to implement the agreement in a way that preserves Syrian stability and provides opportunities for reconstruction.
The meeting, which lasted longer than scheduled due to the breadth of topics, included practical sessions with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and other ministers, as well as a smaller ministerial meeting attended by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan to turn discussions into actionable plans.
Olabi noted that the talks also briefly covered Syria’s potential accession to the U.S.-led Global Coalition against the Islamic State, which would be addressed in a subsequent ministerial meeting.
