Kurdish neighborhoods of Aleppo witness calm after overnight clashes
ALEPPO, Syria (North Press) – The Kurdish-majority neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyeh in Aleppo city, northwestern Syria, witnessed on Tuesday a state of calm and cautious anticipation, following a night of heightened tension and intermittent clashes.
North Press correspondent reported that the situation has since stabilized, with shops and markets reopening and residents resuming normal movement across the neighborhoods.
Meanwhile, Syria’s state-run news agency (SANA) reported late on Monday that an agreement had been reached to ceasefire in Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyeh, bringing an end to the brief armed confrontation and restoring relative calm to the area.
Earlier today, Nuri Sheikho, co-chair of the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyeh Neighborhood Council, told North Press that residents fear a repeat of the scenarios seen in the Syrian coast and Suwayda, after the security incidents that unfolded in the two neighborhoods.
On Monday evening, the two Kurdish neighborhoods experienced clashes between the Kurdish Asayish forces and the security forces of the transitional government after the latter closed all entrances to the neighborhoods, preventing anyone from entering or leaving.
