SDF reports heavy shelling of Tishrin Dam by Damascus forces
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) reported on Wednesday evening that armed groups affiliated with the Damascus government had carried out heavy shelling on Tishrin Dam and its surroundings since the morning, using tanks and field artillery.
The northern Aleppo countryside has witnessed an unprecedented rise in tensions in recent months, with military buildups from both Damascus-aligned forces and SDF-held areas.
In an official statement, the SDF said the shelling directly hit the dam’s structure, as well as nearby workers’ housing and surrounding villages, posing a “serious threat to civilian lives” and exposing vital infrastructure to potential catastrophic damage.
“These attacks come at a time when the situation demands de-escalation and the maintenance of basic services,” the statement said, describing the shelling as a “serious escalation and a blatant violation of ceasefire agreements.” It warned that continuation of such attacks would only deepen tensions and jeopardize stability in the region.
The SDF held the Damascus government “fully responsible for these violations and any resulting consequences,” affirming its “legitimate right to defend itself and its areas.”
