Women represent 14% of candidates in Syrian upcoming elections
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Mohammad Taha al-Ahmad, head of the Syrian People’s Assembly High Elections Commission, announced on Monday that a total of 1,578 candidates have registered to run in the upcoming parliamentary elections, with women representing 14 percent of the total. He noted that the proportion of female candidates varies across governorates.
According to the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), al-Ahmad confirmed that voting will be held on Sunday, Oct. 5, starting at 9:00 a.m. and continuing until the close of polls. Ballot counting is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. the same day.
The Commission announced that elections in Suwayda, Hasakah, and Raqqa governorates will be postponed due to security concerns.
However, it later confirmed the formation of sub-committees in several areas under government control, including Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) in Hasakah countryside, Tel Abyad, and the town of Madan in Raqqa countryside.
Earlier this month, Nawar Najma, spokesperson for the High Commission, said that the election date had not yet been determined. The deadline for submitting candidacy applications officially closed on Sunday across all 50 electoral districts in Syria.
Najma added that the official election campaign period begins on Monday morning and will run until the evening of Oct. 3, while Oct. 4 will be observed as a day of electoral silence.
