Kurdish National Council says meeting with al-Shara still pending

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Naamat Dawood, a member of the Presidential Board of the Kurdish National Council in Syria (KNC), stated that arrangements for a meeting with Transitional President Ahmad al-Shara are still ongoing and have not yet concluded, and that the KNC has not received an official invitation.

Dawood made his remarks on Friday during a symposium organized by the Damascus Local Council affiliated with the Kurdish National Council, under the title “The Latest Political Developments in Syria after the Fall of the Former Regime.”

“There were arrangements for a meeting with President al-Shara, but they have not been finalized, and so far the Kurdish National Council has not received an official invitation,” Dawood told North Press.

He added that if the meeting takes place, the Kurdish National Council would first invite the President to meet with the joint Kurdish delegation, which the council considers authorized to discuss shared Kurdish issues. Secondly, they would present the council’s perspective on Syrian and Kurdish matters.

Dawood stressed, “Syria is multi-ethnic and multi-national, and the Kurdish issue is a national matter that must be addressed constitutionally, with Kurdish national rights enshrined in the constitution.”

He added that resolving such issues, foremost among them the Kurdish issue, “strengthens stability and advances democracy in Syria.”

Among the main demands of the Kurdish National Council, Dawood emphasized “the establishment of a pluralistic, democratic, and stable Syria for all Syrians, where every component retains its distinctiveness in the new constitution, and where Kurdish national rights are affirmed alongside the rights of all Syrian communities.”

The Kurdish National Council is one of several Kurdish political bodies in Syria, and its statements on dialogue and constitutional reform are part of broader discussions on the future of governance and minority rights in post-conflict Syria.
