Security talks between Syria and Israel break down, Reuters says
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Efforts to finalize a security agreement between Syria and Israel collapsed at the last moment, Reuters reported on Friday, citing four informed sources.
According to the report, the negotiations broke down over Israel’s request to establish a humanitarian corridor into Syria’s southern governorate of Suwayda.
Over recent weeks, Syria and Israel had edged closer to consensus on the framework of a deal following months of talks held in Baku, Paris, and London with mediation from the United States. The pace of discussions had intensified ahead of the United Nations General Assembly in New York this week.
The proposed agreement was aimed at creating a demilitarized zone that would include Suwayda, a province that has seen recurring unrest and protests over the past year.
Despite progress made in shaping the broad outlines of the deal, the demand for a humanitarian corridor became a decisive obstacle. Reuters noted that neither government has issued an official statement regarding the suspension of the talks.
For now, the possibility of reviving negotiations remains uncertain, with sources suggesting no immediate plans for further meetings.
