Syria’s al-Sharaa in New York to seek sanctions relief – Expert

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Syrian Transitional President Ahmad al-Sharaa is using his visit to New York to send reassuring messages to the U.S. administration regarding counterterrorism efforts and the protection of minorities, an analyst said on Tuesday.

Meir Masri, professor of political science at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, told North Press that al-Sharaa is also seeking the lifting of sanctions imposed on Syria and is pushing for progress on a security settlement with Israel.

Masri cautioned, however, that the success of these efforts depends not only on Israel’s stance but also on Damascus’s ability to provide credible guarantees, particularly regarding disarmament in southern Syria and the establishment of a political framework to ensure the security of the Druze community in Suwayda Governorate.

Al-Sharaa arrived in the United States on Sep. 21, marking the first visit by a Syrian president in nearly six decades. During his trip, he expressed his willingness to meet again with U.S. President Donald Trump and called for the restoration of bilateral relations.
