Syrian president visits US, calls to restore relations

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara said on Sunday that he wishes to meet US President Donald Trump again and emphasized the need to restore relations between the two countries.

Al-Shara arrived in New York on Sunday morning for a visit described as the first of its kind by a Syrian president to the United States in 60 years.

In an interview with CBS News, al-Shara said, “Trump took a very significant step toward Syria by lifting sanctions through swift and courageous decisions.”

He stressed that the world should not collude again in harming the Syrian people by obstructing the lifting of sanctions, adding, “The world has failed Syria, and today they can help.”

Al-Shara also stated that Trump “understands that Syria must be safe, stable, and united, which is of great importance not only for Syria but for all countries worldwide.”

He added, “We want to discuss many important issues between Syria and the United States, and relations must be restored in a direct and positive way.”

The Syrian president highlighted that the new Syrian administration has renewed hope for refugees and displaced persons so they can return to their homeland.
