SDF accuses Damascus of evading responsibility for Umm Tina massacre
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) criticized on Sunday the Syrian transitional government’s response to the deadly attack on civilians in the village of Umm Tina, in the Deir Hafer countryside, east of Aleppo.
The assault, carried out on Sep. 20 by armed factions affiliated with Damascus, left seven civilians dead, including children aged one to four and elderly women in their seventies, and four others injured.
In a statement issued by its Media Center, the SDF described the Syrian Ministry of Defense’s official response as “a blatant attempt to evade responsibility,” lacking any military or political logic.
“This weak narrative reflects the Ministry’s confusion as it attempts to cover up repeated crimes and attacks carried out by its factions,” the statement said, condemning the government’s denial as a systematic disregard for the lives of Syrian civilians and the victims’ right to justice.
Earlier today, the Syrian Ministry of Defense denied targeting civilian areas in the village of Umm Tina, accusing the SDF of attacking the village.
The SDF called on the Syrian government to hold its armed groups accountable, rein in its factions, and engage in a peaceful process that prioritizes civilian protection over political and military agendas.
