Women’s conference in Hasakah calls for constitutional reform
HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – More than 600 women from diverse ethnic, religious, and social backgrounds gathered in Hasakah on Saturday at a conference organized by Conference Star and the Zenobia Women’s Assembly, calling for amendments to the temporary constitutional declaration issued by the Syrian transitional government to guarantee women’s rights, fundamental freedoms, and democratic participation in Syria’s future.
The final statement of the conference highlighted the broad representation of Syrian women, noting, “At a critical moment for Syria and the region, the conference showcased remarkable diversity, with participation from Arab, Kurdish, Armenian, Assyrian, Yazidi, Druze, Alawite, and Circassian women from various faiths and affiliations, reflecting the rich diversity of Syrian women’s voices.”
The statement also underscored the significant sacrifices made by women during the revolution, including fatalities and serious violations such as sexual assault, while noting that many abducted women’s fates remain unknown.
Key recommendations from the conference included:Holding a national women’s conference to create a common vision for Syria’s future and draft a constitutional framework guaranteeing full equality and protecting gains achieved during the revolution.
Advocating for a pluralistic, decentralized, democratic Syria that ensures freedom, social justice, and equality among all ethnic and religious groups.
Amending the temporary constitutional declaration to secure women’s rights and enhance democratic participation, rejecting the current 20% quota for women in elections as inadequate. The participants demanded that women’s representation should not be less than 50% in all electoral processes and leadership positions.
Affirming the gains achieved by women in northeast Syria as a significant achievement.
Ensuring women’s active participation in transitional justice, including truth-seeking, accountability, compensation, and national reconciliation.
Guaranteeing the safe return of displaced persons from Afrin, Ras al-Ain (Serekaniye), and Tal Abyad, while securing their rights and local stability.
Supporting the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ) as a key pillar in safeguarding women and the wider community, and promoting their role in political and social participation.
The conference concluded with a call for continued advocacy to ensure women’s equal participation in decision-making and the protection of social and political gains.
