France welcomes roadmap to resolve Suwayda crisis
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday welcomed the recently announced roadmap by Syria, Jordan, and the United States to address the crisis in Suwayda province.
Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Sheibani announced on Tuesday the six-step roadmap to resolve the Suwayda crisis with Jordanian and U.S. support. The plan includes holding perpetrators accountable, ensuring aid delivery, compensating affected residents, rebuilding villages, restoring basic services, deploying local forces under the Interior Ministry, securing roads, identifying missing persons, and launching a reconciliation process.
Hours after al-Sheibani’s announcement, the Suwayda High Legal Committee issued a statement rejecting the Syrian Foreign Ministry’s roadmap, describing it as reflecting “blatant contradictions and attempts to evade responsibility and perpetuate impunity.”
In response, the French Foreign Ministry described the roadmap as “an encouraging first step toward a lasting de-escalation” and emphasized the importance of continued dialogue to implement the plan swiftly on the ground.
The roadmap reflects ongoing international efforts to stabilize Suwayda and support local governance, with the AANES and SDF promoting security, reconciliation, and coordinated humanitarian assistance in areas under their control.
Officials confirmed that the next phase involves deploying local authorities and security units to implement reconciliation measures, deliver aid, and rebuild essential infrastructure.
