Syria, US, Jordan unveil six-step plan to resolve Suwayda crisis
SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Sheibani announced on Tuesday a six-step roadmap aimed at resolving the ongoing crisis in Suwayda, in a plan coordinated with U.S. and Jordanian officials. The announcement came during a joint press conference with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and U.S. Special Envoy to Syria Thomas Barrack.
Speaking at the conference, al-Sheibani stated, “The Syrian government has prepared a clear roadmap to safeguard rights, support justice, strengthen community reconciliation, and open the path for healing long-standing wounds.”
The six-step plan outlines practical measures, including coordination with the United Nations system to hold accountable those who attacked civilians and their property. Ensuring the uninterrupted flow of humanitarian and medical aid constitutes the second step, while the third focuses on compensating affected individuals, rebuilding towns and villages, and facilitating the return of displaced residents.
The fourth step prioritizes the restoration of basic services and conditions for the resumption of normal life. The fifth calls for the deployment of local security forces under the Ministry of Interior to protect roads and ensure safe movement for civilians and trade. The final step emphasizes determining the fate of missing persons and releasing detainees, followed by initiating an inclusive internal reconciliation process engaging all communities in Suwayda.
U.S. Special Envoy Barrack highlighted that the United States worked closely with both Syria and Jordan to formulate the roadmap. “We have collaborated with Syria and Jordan to reach a roadmap for Suwayda,” he said, emphasizing coordination and support for humanitarian and governance initiatives.
Authorities have indicated that immediate next steps include the launch of investigative procedures for past attacks and the mobilization of aid convoys to affected communities. The roadmap also aims to accelerate infrastructure repairs and community reconciliation initiatives in the coming weeks.
