Syrian politician calls for joint committees to secure Kurds’ return to Afrin

ALEPPO, Syria (North Press) – Syrian politician Mustafa Qalaji called on Monday for the two parties to the March 10 agreement to establish joint committees on the ground in Afrin, northwestern, to facilitate the return of displaced Syrian Kurds to their homes.

Qalaji emphasized that “Afrin is not a city outside Syria. It is a Syrian city in every sense of the word. The March 10 agreement, signed between the SDF and the central government in Damascus, marked an important step forward, building on arrangements reached in Sheikh Maqsoud and al-Ashrafiyeh.”

He added that the agreement provides a framework for forming joint committees to ensure the return of displaced Syrian Kurds, including compensation and other measures grounded in human rights.

“This shows that what is required now are practical steps. Lectures, rhetoric, and endless talk are no longer useful. What matters today is that we already have an agreement on the ground,” Qalaji said, noting that ongoing efforts aim to support the accord and urge both parties to fully implement their commitments.

Qalaji highlighted that Article Five of the March 10 agreement explicitly guarantees the return of forcibly displaced persons, stressing that “the people of Afrin are among those displaced, just like many others forced from their areas across Syria. Therefore, we must move toward practical implementation.”
