Counterterrorism operation in Syria’s Hasakah thwarts ISIS plans
HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – Jwan Jalal, commander of the Internal Security Forces (Asayish) in Hasakah, told North Press on Saturday that a security campaign carried out by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Asayish, and Women’s Protection Units thwarted an “ISIS terrorist plot to target the region.”
“The aim of the security operation was to reinforce security and establish control over the city,” Jalal added. Earlier on Saturday, the SDF announced the arrest of 39 individuals accused of belonging to ISIS cells.
Jalal explained that the operation was prompted by monitoring the general security situation. “Suspicious movements were observed by ISIS cells attempting to organize themselves to create disorder in and around prisons, particularly those holding thousands of ISIS members,” he said.
He described the campaign as a proactive measure to prevent security breaches, especially near prison facilities. “The field operation included several joint raids by Asayish and the SDF, involving cordoning off multiple neighborhoods and conducting thorough searches for weapons, ammunition, and suspects linked to these cells,” Jalal added.
The preliminary results of the operation include 39 arrests, which may increase, alongside the seizure of dozens of weapons, eight hand grenades, military gear, ammunition stores, and some specialized arms.
“Among those detained were confirmed ISIS members and others suspected of affiliation. Investigations are ongoing. Some of the arrested individuals were planning attacks around prisons to cause chaos in the city,” Jalal noted.
The campaign underscores the continued counterterrorism efforts by local security forces in Hasakah to maintain stability and prevent ISIS from exploiting vulnerable areas.
