Jordanian forces foil infiltration, drug smuggling attempt from Syria
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The Jordanian army announced on Sunday that it had foiled an attempt to infiltrate the country and smuggle a large quantity of drugs across the northeastern border with Syria.
In a statement published on its official website, the army said that units from the Eastern Military Zone thwarted an attempt by a group of individuals to infiltrate its area of responsibility.
The statement explained that the group attempted to cross the border illegally, prompting rapid reaction patrols to respond and apply the rules of engagement, which forced the smugglers to retreat back into Syrian territory.
Following search and inspection operations in the area, the army confirmed that large quantities of narcotics were seized and handed over to the relevant authorities.
The incident comes just days after the Jordanian army announced the arrest of three individuals who attempted to illegally cross the Syrian border into Jordan on August 20.
