Suicide attack injures two Syrian security officers in Deir ez-Zor

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – Two members of the Syrian General Security were seriously injured on Friday evening when two suicide bombers attacked a checkpoint in the eastern city of Mayadin, Deir ez-Zor countryside.
According to a North Press correspondent, the assailants targeted the “al-Siyasiya” checkpoint, sparking a confrontation with security personnel stationed there. One attacker detonated an explosive belt, injuring two officers, while the other was apprehended before being neutralized by the checkpoint guards.
Government sources in the city indicated that the attackers were believed to be members of the Islamic State (ISIS). The incident marks yet another attempt by the group to destabilize areas in eastern Syria, where remnants of ISIS cells continue to operate despite intensified security operations.
The injured security personnel were immediately transferred to a local hospital for treatment. Medical sources confirmed that both remain in critical condition.
Following the attack, security forces cordoned off the area and launched a sweeping search operation in and around Mayadin. The operation aimed to detect potential sleeper cells linked to the perpetrators. Eyewitnesses reported an extensive deployment of forces across the city after the incident.
State-run media also confirmed the attack, stating: “An ISIS suicide assault targeted the al-Siyasiya checkpoint in Mayadin. Security units responded quickly, killing one attacker while the second detonated himself.”
ISIS, which once controlled vast territories in Syria and Iraq, has resorted to sporadic insurgent-style operations in recent years. Deir ez-Zor Governorate has witnessed recurring attacks against checkpoints, military convoys, and local officials, particularly in areas under government control along the Euphrates River.
The eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor is administered by the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES). In AANES-held territories, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), with support from the Global Coalition, continue counterterrorism campaigns aimed at dismantling ISIS cells, limiting the group’s ability to reorganize or launch major assaults.
