Renowned Syrian artist found murdered in Damascus home
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Renowned Syrian artist Diala al-Wadi was found on Sunday murdered in her home in the upscale al-Malki neighborhood of Damascus, Syria, after reportedly being strangled by unidentified assailants who broke into her residence.
Local media reported that authorities of the Syria transitional government launched a full investigation into the incident and is collecting forensic evidence from the scene to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
Diala al-Wadi was the daughter of celebrated Iraqi musician Solhi al-Wadi, who founded the Arab Institute of Music in Damascus in 1962 and later established the Syrian National Symphony Orchestra in 1993.
Al-Wadi was considered a prominent figure in Syria’s cultural and artistic circles, having participated in a number of theatrical productions and television dramas in recent years.
The Damascus branch of the Syrian Artists’ Syndicate issued a statement mourning her loss. Her death has triggered a wave of sorrow and condemnation across Syria’s artistic and cultural communities.
