Damascus responds to Suwayda ceasefire violations with official statement
Suwayda, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian Interior Ministry on Sunday issued a statement accusing armed factions in the southern governorate of Suwayda of violating a ceasefire agreement, following renewed clashes over the weekend that left at least one fighter dead.
On Saturday, armed confrontations broke out between local factions west of Suwayda city and forces affiliated with the Syrian transitional government. The violence continued into Sunday morning, disrupting the fragile ceasefire that had been in place since recent de-escalation efforts began.
In its statement, the Interior Ministry said, “Since the beginning of the ceasefire agreement in Suwayda, the Syrian state—through its military, security, and civilian institutions—has spared no effort in maintaining the truce in order to restore stability across the governorate.”
The ministry added that it had worked to ensure the safety of civilians and the gradual return of basic services and daily life in the area.
However, the ministry accused what it described as “rebel groups” of undermining those efforts. It said that these groups had launched what it called “treacherous” attacks on Internal Security Forces and had shelled several villages using rockets and mortars, resulting in casualties among security personnel.
