Media activist found hanged in Deir ez-Zor
DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – The body of Syrian media activist Kindi al-Adai was found on Sunday in his apartment in the al-Joura neighborhood of Deir ez-Zor, local sources reported. Al-Adai, who had returned from Germany nearly a month ago, was discovered hanged, with signs of physical abuse visible on his body.
Kindi al-Adai was known for his media activism during the early years of the Syrian conflict. After seeking asylum in Germany, he became a prominent voice among Syrian diaspora activists, using media platforms to shed light on developments inside Syria. His recent return to Deir ez-Zor reportedly marked a renewed focus on documenting conditions in his hometown.
Deir ez-Zor remains a divided city, with the western part, including al-Joura, under the control of Syrian transitional government forces. In contrast, areas east of the Euphrates are governed by the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), which is supported by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). While the SDF has maintained security and stability across much of northeast Syria, regions west of the Euphrates have witnessed ongoing instability, enforced disappearances, and limited press freedom.
Human rights observers have previously documented risks faced by returning Syrians, especially activists and journalists, in government-held areas.
