U.S. repatriates minor from camp in NE Syria
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The United States repatriated on Tuesday a minor U.S. citizen from a displacement camp in northeastern Syria, reuniting him with his family.
In a statement, the U.S. State Department said, “Approximately 30,000 individuals from more than 70 countries remain in two displaced persons camps in northeast Syria, the majority of whom are children under the age of 12; they deserve a chance at life outside the camps.”
The statement emphasized that “The only durable solution to the humanitarian and security crisis in these displaced persons camps in northeast Syria is for countries of origin to repatriate, rehabilitate, reintegrate, and where appropriate, ensure accountability for their nationals.”
In May 2024, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller announced the repatriation of 11 U.S. citizens from northeastern Syria, including five minors. At the time, he also noted that the United States had helped facilitate the return of citizens to Canada, Finland, and the Netherlands.
