176,000 displaced in southern Syria amid deteriorating conditions – UN
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The United Nations announced on Friday that approximately 176,000 people have been displaced from southern Syria due to the rapidly worsening situation in the region.
Gonzalo Vargas Llosa, UNHCR Representative in Syria, called on the international community to step up humanitarian support efforts.
He emphasized that UNHCR is scaling up its support together with other humanitarian actors – distributing emergency kits, providing protection services, and offering psychological & child support.
Llosa added that UNHCR is working closely with other humanitarian actors to scale up support by distributing emergency supplies and providing essential protection services, including psychological support and care for affected children.
So far, emergency relief items have been distributed to 3,570 displaced people. An additional 2,500 emergency kits have been sent to Daraa and Damascus countryside, and another 2,000 kits to the Suwayda Governorate.
He also noted that UNHCR is providing critical protection services—such as emergency mental health support and child protection activities—through its network of community centers in the affected areas.
Llosa stressed that UNHCR has maintained a field presence in Suwayda throughout the recent developments, and underscored that ensuring safe access for humanitarian workers is essential to saving lives.
