ISIS launches multiple attacks on SDF positions in Deir ez-Zor
DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – The Islamic State (ISIS) launched a series of coordinated attacks targeting checkpoints, a vehicle, and a military post belonging to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria.
In a statement issued Friday evening, the SDF’s Media Center said the attacks were part of ISIS’s ongoing efforts to revive its declining presence in the region.
According to the statement, one ISIS cell attacked a military vehicle belonging to the SDF in the village of al-Zur, in the al-Busayrah area east of Deir ez-Zor. The assault resulted in the death of one SDF fighter and the injury of another.
SDF forces returned fire and engaged in clashes with the attackers. Although the cell managed to escape, SDF units launched search and sweep operations to locate those responsible.
In a separate incident, another ISIS cell targeted an SDF military post in the town of Diban, also in eastern Deir ez-Zor.
SDF forces responded with force, inflicting injuries on the attackers, who fled under heavy fire. No casualties or injuries were reported among SDF forces, the statement read.
A third attack targeted a checkpoint operated by the Internal Security Forces of North and East Syria (Asayish) between the towns of Shuhail and al-Busayrah.
The SDF emphasized that ISIS is exploiting the ongoing instability in Syria to regroup and reactivate its operations.
