French-Syrian citizen killed amid clashes in Syria’s Suwayda
SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – A French citizen of Syrian origin was killed during the recent outbreak of violence in Suwayda Governorate, southern Syria, AFP reported on Wednesday.
According to the agency, the Druze IT specialist Firas Abu Latif was killed during clashes in Suwayda, citing confirmation from his sister.
Suwayda witnessed intense clashes last week between armed Druze groups and Bedouian tribal militants, resulting in hundreds of deaths and injuries, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. A ceasefire came into effect last Sunday, bringing a temporary halt to the bloodshed.
The Abu Latif family had lost contact with Firas, who had traveled to Syria for vacation on July 17. Two days later, they were informed that his body had been discovered at home.
In a related development, U.S. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce confirmed at a press briefing the death of Hossam Saraya, an American citizen of Syrian descent. No further details were provided regarding the circumstances of his death.
