First group of stranded families leave Syria’s Suwayda under agreement
SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – Local sources told North Press on Monday that the first group of families stranded in Suwayda Governorate, southern Syria, had arrived safely in the Daraa countryside.
The evacuation follows an agreement between the Syrian transitional government and armed Druze groups, after more than a week of intense tensions and violent clashes.
Earlier in the day, Suwayda’s head of security forces, Ahmed al-Dalati, confirmed that an agreement had been reached to facilitate the safe departure of civilians wishing to leave the governorate.
“We affirm our full commitment to ensuring the safe exit of all civilians who wish to leave Suwayda,” al-Dalati said in a press statement.
He also noted that authorities are prepared to allow those wishing to return to Suwayda to do so, adding: “We are ready to facilitate re-entry into the governorate for anyone who chooses to come back.”
Al-Dalati emphasized that a security cordon had been imposed around Suwayda “to maintain security and bring an end to the fighting.”
