SDF captures ISIS leaders in Hawl Camp in NE Syria
HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced on Thursday the capture of leaders of the Islamic State (ISIS) inside Hawl Camp in Hasakah countryside, northeastern Syria.
In an official statement, the SDF said its military operations units, with support from the U.S.-led Global Coalition, conducted a security operation targeting ISIS leaders within Hawl camp.
The operation led to the arrest of Mahmoud Safi al-Awwal, known by the alias Abu al-Baraa, and Abdul Razzaq Mahmoud al-Salama, known as Abu Abdurrahman.
According to the statement, Mahmoud served as the group’s military emir inside the camp, where he orchestrated terrorist operations and was actively involved in the smuggling of weapons and individuals in and out of the camp.
Abdul Razzaq, meanwhile, held the position of the organization’s “religious emir” and was tasked with recruiting children and delivering so-called “Sharia lessons,” indoctrinating them with extremist ideology.
The SDF added that three smartphones were seized during the operation, which the detainees were using to communicate with ISIS leadership in areas controlled by Turkish forces.
